Sanitization of Pedicure Filing Equipment
The most ideal situation when it comes to pedicure filing equipment is to simply have disposable types where a new one is used for every person. This will completely alleviate the issue of cross contamination between clients and also not require any lengthy sanitization regimes for tools that are shared amongst clients.
Naturally, there are some pedicure nail salons that do believe in this path and have decided to go for a complete set of disposable items to completely eliminate the risk, however for the majority of nail salons; this simply isn’t viable as the costs incurred for stocking complete sets of disposable tools are prohibitively expensive. The best option would then be to stock some cheaper tools that are disposable and some which are permanent. There-in lays another tip, if you are in a pedicure nail salon and notice that there are some disposable items like files or buffers, it generally indicates that the nail salon in question does consider the sanitation very important and have taken the expensive step to remove some of the risk for their clients.
My recommendation is that all filing and buffing equipment should be disposed of after use. Pedicure filing and buffing equipment is quite cheap and that if filing and buffing equipment can be replaced quite readily without being an overly expensive financial burden, naturally if you decide to make other items such as nail cutters or cuticle trimmers disposable, the financial burden will be much higher.
If you choose not to dispose of pedicure files or buffers after each use then the sanitization method of these instruments are slightly different compared to other pedicure instruments. The important thing to note is that besides cleaning off any large residue of nail of skin from the tool such as when cleaning tools like nail clippers, with files and buffers you must also worry about the micro particles of dead skin and nail which may be lodges between the fine file of buffer elements. These too, with suitable environments can breed micro-organisms.
With files and buffers you need to make sure that all the dead nails and skin including little bits that you cannot see are properly removed from the surface of the instruments. Very few people do this, but it’s vitally important that you actually brush the files and buffers under running water to make sure that all the little microscopic particles are actually removed before you subject the instruments to disinfection of sterilization treatments after.
