Pedicure Disinfectant - Phenolics
Phenolics or sometimes just referred to as Phenols are an active ingredient in most bottles of
"household disinfectant" that can be bought over the shelf. Phenolics or Phenols are very similar in structure to alcohol but because of their
unique structures they can’t be considered as alcohols. Rather because of their structure Phenolics or Phenols are generally higher in acidity
thus making it very suitable as a cleaning and disinfectant agent.
Although not specifically stated, phenolics are normally added to most disinfectants in small
quantities as it increases the spectrum of disinfection. As stated earlier it its alcohol base and acidic nature works very well to sterilize
equipment against a wide variety of bacteria/fungus and even viruses.
The purest form of phenolics that is available for consumer purchase is carbolic acid which is
a relatively pure form of a phenol compound. It is very corrosive in its pure form and as with any acid will burn the skin and is toxic. Rather
for manicure and pedicure purposes a disinfectant that contains phenolics should be used to clean contact areas with human as its wide spectrum
of disinfection is beneficial to maintaining good hygiene.
